ASCD debrief…part 1 March 12, 2010

We just returned from the ASCD annual conference in San Antonio, Texas where we learned about exciting developments in education.  We also had the chance to present in front of a national audience the work we do in the Professional Development Department at Eagle County Schools.  The presentation was received very favorably based on the feedback and comments from audience members.

I saw a number of dynamic presentations that raised provocative topics and pushed some of my thinking.

Yong Zhao reported on the positives of American education even when compared to the rest of the world.  He argues that American children may not test as well, but are able to be more well-rounded than students in other countries, and are able to pursue activities aligned with their strengths.  He notes that we are still the model that many other developed countries try to emulate.  He also encouraged participants to learn for about the “Strengths Movement.”

Douglas Reeves spoke about planning for success in professional development.  One of the more poignant graphs he displayed demonstrated the “law of initiative fatigue,” which reinforces his call for schools to focus on a limited number of reform efforts.  He also implored for educators to find a harmonious passion in their work, in which the result is something we influence and the result is important to us.

Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey delivered a great presentation on the power of walk-throughs and the coachable moments that occur as a result.  They also note that we are all immune to feedback unless we have an agreement of quality. They have some excellent books that are available on their website www.fisherandfrey.com .

TIE Conference ’09 June 23, 2009

I’m attending the TIE (Technology In Education) confernce right now at Copper Mountain Colorado.  There is a wealth of information being presented with a lot of new tools to enhance the learning process.

I’m currently in a session entitled “Designing with Forever in Mind” in which we are discussing ways to make learning permanent.  Much of the dialog has revolved around how to use various tools to create meaningful student projects that live beyond the classroom.

3 new sites that have come to my attention are – Screencastle.com, drop.io, and bubbl.us

Screencastle.com allows users to capture their work on their desktop, record it, save it and transfer it.  Great for student projects, or for demonstrating work to absent students.

Drop.io is a great site that enables people to leave voice messages that can then be archived and retrieved later.  This is a great way to harness the power of cell phones in class.

bubbl.us is a free brainstorming website that is similar to Kidspiration or Inspiration.

I have attempted to upload a screencast video of my using bubbl.us  - let’s see if it works.
